The Ancient Soul is a fragile, passive spirit that drifts through the Aether near the Ancient Shrine.
Behavior
Ancient Souls hover slowly through the air and never attack the player. They begin neutral and will occasionally dance in place. If a player hurts one, it broadcasts fear to nearby souls (within 10 blocks) and all of them flee, avoiding players until they calm down. Feeding a frightened soul an Ambrosium Shard instantly calms it back to neutral and improves your standing with the Ancients. With only 1 HP, an Ancient Soul is not meant to be killed in combat but captured with a glass bottle.
Spawning
Ancient Souls spawn naturally around the Ancient Shrine and, more broadly, anywhere in the Aether dimension near a player, subject to a nearby-soul cap.

Drops
Ancient Souls drop nothing when killed. Instead of being fought, a soul is captured by interacting with it while holding a glass bottle, giving you a Bottled Ancient Soul.
Bottling a soul lowers your standing with the Ancients, while killing one lowers it further. Killing a soul by hand grants a large amount of experience (150).
